Habitat Newsletter: January 2026

Congratulations, Cedrick!

Cedrick's Closing.jpeg

Cedrick closed on his house in December, just in time for the holidays! We hope he and his family spend many happy holidays together in their new home. First order of business: family dance party!

Welcome, George and Mairy!

George and Mairy look forward to finishing and moving into their new home! Their children enjoy playing sports and look forward to making new friends in the Habitat neighborhood. George and Mairy look forward to decorating their own home for Christmas. They hope to learn skills on the construction site that will come in handy as new homeowners.

“I want to give [Habitat volunteers and donors] a big thanks for all the support and help they are offering my family and other families. I’ll pray that God will continue to bless them and give them the best.”

Upcoming Events

REALTOR Build

REALTOR Build is quickly approaching! We are partnering with The Columbia Board of REALTORS in a day of impact on January 14th. About 60 REALTORS joined us last year! It is an exciting and impactful event that brings REALTORS together in a day of service.

Sherry McBride Brown Volunteer Fair

Show Me Central Habitat for Humanity will be attending the Sherry McBride Brown Volunteer Fair at the Columbia Public Library on January 19th from 10 am-1 pm in the Friends Room. Come talk to us about how YOU can get involved in our mission of affordable homeownership! You can find more information on the Daniel Boone Regional Library’s website.

Thank You, Donors!

We want to give a huge thank you to everyone who donated during our CoMo Gives campaign and throughout 2025! Your support keeps us going and allows us to continue to work with families to build and own their homes with an affordable mortgage. We were able to raise $12,265 for our mission!

If you’d also like to support the work Habitat does in mid Missouri,go to showmehabitat.org/donate. We appreciate your support!

Three Cheers for Volunteers!

Teri.jpg

Whether they swing a hammer on the construction site or sweep the floors at the ReStore, we have a deep appreciation for every single volunteer. About 80% of Habitat’s work is done by volunteers, so we truly couldn’t do it without you! Thank you!

Teri is a fantastic volunteer who has been working in the ReStore since 2021. In 2023, she was a finalist for Impact COMO’s volunteer of the year award [pictured above]! Bringing past experience from working in a thrift store overseas, she researches, prices, organizes, stores, and shelves almost all holiday items and collectibles year round. If you purchased affordable Christmas decorations from us this year, you have Teri to thank!

Want to get involved, too? There are a variety of ways you can help! You don’t have to know anything about construction to make an impact. Call or stop by to talk about opportunities to work on the construction site or at the ReStore, or visit the Volunteer page on our website to learn more.

The ReStore

Every purchase from or donation to the ReStore supports us in building decent, affordable houses with families right here in our community. You can shop for or donate a wide variety of clean, working items at the Restore from 8:30-4:00, Tuesday-Saturday. You can find more information on donating, including a list of common items we do not accept, by visiting our website and clicking the ReStore tab, or by calling us at 573-499-1202.

We also offer large item pickup within city limits of Columbia, subject to driver availability. Call 573-499-1202 for more information, or fill out the form on the ReStore page of our website to arrange to have items picked up. We will get your contact information and address and a driver will contact you when they are available to pick it up. In general, pickups get done within 1-3 weeks, depending on driver and donor availability.

One small way you can help: Bring intact, clean shopping bags to the ReStore for customers to carry their purchases out in. This allows more of our ReStore funds to go towards building houses, and keeps plastic out of the landfill!

REMINDER: In general, when Columbia Public Schools close due to inclement weather, so do we.

Changes in Leadership

Austin View and Ashley Switzer, two longtime, influential leaders of Show Me Central Habitat for Humanity, have recently gone on to pursue new opportunities in their careers. We are grateful for all the time, effort, and heart both of them have put into the mission and wish them all the best moving forward. While we are sad to see them go, the mission and work of Habitat remains the same: working with families and community members to build decent, affordable houses in Columbia.

Jennifer James, who has served on the Habitat Board of Directors and Family Selection Committee for 15 years and has 25 years of experience in corporate leadership roles, was selected for the executive director position. Jennifer looks forward to maximizing the impact of our ReStore and building more homes with families in our community.

We are currently in the interview process for the Fundraising and Community Outreach Manager role. We look forward to welcoming a new member to our team!
